How to check if a Tecno or Infinix phone is original
Short answer: dial *#06# and check the IMEI with Carlcare, the official service for Tecno, Infinix and itel. That proves the number belongs to a real phone of that model, not that this phone is it. Then check what is inside: the processor, RAM, storage and cameras must match the real model.
Tecno, Infinix and itel are among the most sold phones in Africa, so they are also copied and resold as newer models. The checks below take a few minutes and need nothing but the phone.
1. Match the IMEI in three places
- Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. The IMEI numbers appear (two on a dual-SIM phone).
- Open Settings, About phone, and find the IMEI (sometimes under Status or IMEI information).
- Compare both with the label on the box.
All three must match. A different number on the box means the box belongs to another phone.
2. Check the IMEI with Carlcare
Carlcare is the official after-sales service for Tecno, Infinix and itel. Its website and the Carlcare app have a warranty check: enter the IMEI and it shows the model and the warranty status. If it shows a different model, or does not know the number, ask the seller why. If it matches, that is a good sign, but keep going: an IMEI is only a number, and copies sometimes carry a real one.
3. Do not count "extended RAM"
Many Tecno and Infinix phones are sold as "8 GB + 8 GB". The phone has 8 GB of real RAM; the second number is storage used as slower, virtual memory (Tecno calls it Memory Fusion). A phone advertised as "16 GB RAM" usually has 8.
4. Check the processor and the storage
Before you meet, look up the model's processor on the official Tecno or Infinix page. Then read what the phone really has with an app that reads the hardware, not the name in Settings. A copy usually has an older chip with fewer or slower cores. Copies also show a big storage number that is not there; only writing data and reading it back proves the real size (see fake storage check).
5. Look at the software
Real Tecno phones run HiOS, Infinix phones run XOS and itel phones run itelOS; Settings, About phone shows the version. Open Settings, System update: a real phone finds the maker's updates. A copy can fake the name but rarely gets real updates.
6. Test every part
Original does not mean good. Test the touch screen and display, the battery, the cameras, speakers, charging port and SIM, as in the used phone checklist.
Knowfone does steps 4 to 6 in about 7 minutes on any Tecno, Infinix or itel phone. It reads the real processor, graphics chip, RAM and cameras, proves the storage size, asks the phone's security chip for a signed answer, tests every part and then says: good to buy, buy only at a lower price, or don't buy.
Questions
Is there a code to check if a Tecno phone is original?
Dial *#06# to see the IMEI, then check it with Carlcare's warranty check. There is no official code that proves a Tecno, Infinix or itel phone is original, and most recent models have no public test menu. Check the hardware instead: processor, RAM, storage and cameras must match the real model.
Does the Carlcare warranty check prove a phone is original?
It proves the IMEI belongs to a real phone of that model. It does not prove the phone in your hand is that phone, because a copy can carry a copied IMEI. Use it together with a hardware check.
What does 8 GB + 8 GB RAM mean on Tecno and Infinix?
The phone has 8 GB of real RAM. The second 8 GB is storage the phone borrows as slower, virtual memory (Tecno calls it Memory Fusion). A seller who says 16 GB RAM is adding both numbers.
How do I check battery health on a Tecno or Infinix phone?
Look in Settings, Battery. Many models show no health figure, so an app has to measure it. Knowfone compares the battery's capacity with its design capacity and watches it under load.
