Privacy policy
In short: Knowfone has no account and keeps your reports on your phone. It shows ads from Google AdMob outside the tests; Google receives standard device information to show and count those ads.
What the app measures, and where it stays
Knowfone tests the phone it runs on: its identity, security state, screen, touch, speakers and microphones, cameras, battery, processor and memory, storage, sensors, buttons and port, and wireless radios. The results are saved as reports in the app's private storage on that phone. We do not receive them. They are deleted when you delete them in Settings or uninstall the app, and they are excluded from cloud backup.
Tests that use the camera or microphone process the picture or sound on the phone, in memory, and do not save or send it.
Permissions and why they are asked
- Camera: to test every lens, the flash and the screen's light.
- Microphone: the speakers play a tone and the microphones listen for it.
- Location: to receive GPS satellites and list nearby Wi-Fi networks for the wireless test. Your position is not saved or sent.
- Phone state: to see whether a SIM card is present and the network works. Phone numbers and IMEI are not collected.
- Bluetooth and nearby devices: to check that Bluetooth turns on and finds devices.
- Sensors, vibration, fingerprint: to test that these parts respond.
- Internet: for the security test and for ads, described below.
Each permission is asked only when the test that needs it starts, and you can skip any test.
Network use
Security test
During the identity and security tests the app downloads Google's public list of withdrawn security keys (android.googleapis.com). It sends no information about you or your phone beyond what any download needs, such as your IP address.
Ads from Google AdMob
Knowfone is free and shows ads from Google AdMob. Ads never load or play while a test runs, and never appear before your answer. To show ads, measure them and prevent fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects and shares with Google: the device's advertising ID and other device identifiers, IP address and approximate location derived from it, information about how you interact with ads, and diagnostic data. The ad request from Knowfone also carries a few general words about the report on screen (for example "phone battery"), never the phone's model, your reports or anything that identifies you.
Where the law requires it (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and some US states), Knowfone shows Google's consent message before any ad, and you can change your choice at any time in Settings, "Ad privacy choices". You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings (Google, Ads). Learn how Google uses this information at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Google Play
If you installed Knowfone from Google Play, the app may ask Google Play to show its rating card. Google Play handles that card under its own terms.
Sharing a report
A report leaves your phone only when you share it yourself, as a link or as a seller certificate picture. The link holds a short summary of the report (phone name and model, the answer, the date, and one result and number per part) after the "#" sign. Browsers never send that part of a link to the website, so this website does not receive or store your report. Anyone you send the link to can read the summary.
This website
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which may keep standard server logs such as IP addresses (see GitHub's privacy statement). It loads fonts from Google Fonts. It has no analytics, cookies or trackers of its own.
Children
Knowfone is meant for adults buying or selling a phone and is not directed at children under 13.
Your choices
- Delete any or all reports in the app (History, or Settings, "Delete all reports").
- Change ad consent in Settings, "Ad privacy choices" (shown where the law requires it).
- Uninstall the app to remove everything it stored.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Questions: use the developer email on Knowfone's Google Play page, or open an issue at github.com/usergc101/usergc101.github.io/issues.
