Fake storage on phones: how to check the real memory size
Fake storage is one of the most common tricks in cheap copies and some used phones: the phone says 512 GB, but only 16 or 32 GB is real. Everything looks fine until the phone fills up and photos start to disappear.
Warning signs
- A price far below the real model with the claimed storage.
- A processor that does not match the model (see original or clone).
- Photos or videos that become grey or corrupted after the phone has been used for a while.
How to check
Only a write-and-read-back test proves the size: write known data, read it back, and compare. Copying one big video does not help, because the fake software can pretend to store it.
Knowfone writes and reads back real data with checksums in every check, compares the size with every version of the model, and offers a full fill test in the Full check.
Questions
What is fake storage?
A phone or memory card whose software reports more space than the chip really has. Writing beyond the real capacity silently overwrites or loses data.
Can I see fake storage in Settings?
No. Settings shows what the software reports, which is exactly what is faked.
How do you prove the real size?
By writing data across the storage, then reading it back and checking every byte. Knowfone does a quick version in every check and a full fill in the Full check, after asking.
